  4.     Many companies cherish their place in the urban skyline, but
  5. quite a few others want to escape the high rents and downtown
  6. hassles. Sears said last week it will move the company's
  7. merchandising division, which has 6,000 employees, from the
  8. landmark Sears Tower in Chicago's Loop to a planned office complex
  9. in suburban Hoffman Estates (pop. 44,761). Dozens of cities and
  10. states had been trying to lure Sears, but Illinois and Hoffman
  11. Estates prevailed with a package of incentives worth $241 million.

  13.     Only a day later, Manhattan-based Merrill Lynch said it plans
  14. to move 2,500 of its 13,000 workers across the Hudson River to
  15. Jersey City. Angry over the rejection, New York City Mayor Ed Koch
  16. revoked Merrill Lynch's position as senior underwriter for the
  17. city's municipal bonds.
